Nottingham set for retail revolution
It would seem these are exciting times for Nottingham. Not only do Nottingham Forest sit atop the Sky Bet Championship, but the city is also poised to undergo a retail revolution.
Both of the city’s main shopping centres, the Broadmarsh Centre and the Victoria Centre are set to receive major investments, which will breathe much needed life into the retail scene.
The Broadmarsh Centre, recently rebranded as intu Broadmarsh, has suffered a number of past false dawns in terms of investment, but is finally set to undergo a makeover.
£150m is going to be invested in the Centre, which according to council leader Jon Collins, is a long time in the making: “I can understand people being sceptical having seen scheme after scheme. But this is the real deal. We now have a development agreement which is proposing a realistic scheme with Intu where we’re clear about the investment.”
Up to 2,000 jobs are expected to be created from the project, which will look to bring new brands, better leisure facilities and more restaurants to the centre.
Intu are also the parent company of Nottingham’s other major shopping location, which they rebranded intu Victoria Centre in 2013. Plans for £40m of investment in the Victoria Centre are looking to update the centre to provide a greater retail and leisure experience for visitors.
However, retail isn’t the only focus of the regeneration going on Nottingham, with an £800m plan to improve transport underway, which will redevelop the train station, extend the tram network and improve roads.
With another £10m retail scheme expected to create 200 jobs and the Ashes coming to Trent Bridge in 2015, there is much to be optimistic about and this is certainly something that Mike Butterworth, COO of intu, agrees with: “Nottingham used to be the fifth most important retail destination in the country and I think it will be back there.”
So as the Forest look at returning to the Premier League for the first time since 1998, Nottingham as a city may also soon be considered as being among the best shopping destinations in the country once again.
