Boris kicks off World Green Building Week
It’s World Green Building Week – and today at London’s City Hall Boris Johnson called on banks to support property owners in carrying out environmentally-friendly refurbishments in the capital. Johnson said the Greater London Authority had already carried out green refurbishments on 42 of its buildings and claimed that the investment involved would produce a profit of at least £1m over the next eight years. Johnson said banks could be “much more creative” about the funding they could provide for green retrofitting projects, reports Property Week.
The World Green Building Council is holding events around the world this week to highlight how sustainable buildings can help address social, economic and environmental issues at both global and local level. As part of its activities this week it will be publishing a report entitled “Tackling Global Climate Change – Meeting Local Priorities” which will be available to download from its website.
The UK Green Building Council has been campaigning for better data on which to base policy and business decisions relating to existing commercial property. It advocates Display Energy Certificates, which show the actual energy performance of a building in use, to be implemented alongside Energy Performance Certificates, and helped to provide the recent Guide for Landlords and Tenants in relation to the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme – about which we have blogged before. You can find more of the UK-GBC’s publications and research on its website.
Green Issues says
Well, I think first and FOREMOST, Boris and friends need to actually concentrate on bringing all the empty Council owned properties around London back into a livable and profitable condition.
Green comes second to this in my opinion.
I have recorded a number of empty council and public owned properties around London, a few of them are now in habitable condition after being empty for 2-5 years.
When they get those houses in order then they can come and tell me about green measures.
