Avison Young: Plans for Bootle Strand refurbishment work approved
The regeneration of Bootle and the Strand shopping centre took another step forward last week when refurbishment plans were approved by Sefton Council’s planning committee.
Proposals approved at Wednesday night’s meeting will see the creation of a town square and new sloped and terraced areas from Stanley Road to provide pedestrian links with the Canalside and the adjacent Salt and Tar events space.
Remodelled and new indoor and outdoor spaces will mean more green spaces and community areas as well as a new, lighter atmosphere. There will also be improved connections including better pedestrian and cycle links.
The site will be fully accessible by wheelchairs and pushchairs, and easy to use by people with impaired mobility.
People can watch a fly-through video of the development at www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdQL-ZLcdm0.
Submitted at the end of October, the plans were shaped by responses to the Council’s recent consultation from people who live in, work in, and visit Bootle. They also include ways to reduce carbon use as much as possible and detail sustainability targets in line with Sefton Council’s Net Zero ambitions.
Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economy and Skills, said:
“Last night’s approval of our ambitious and exciting plans for the Strand are an exciting next step in the regeneration of Bootle town centre.
“We consulted local people on our plans and the overwhelming majority of those who responded were in support, so I am sure they will be pleased we can move ahead to the next stage of the development.”
Preparations have already started ahead of the partial demolition work required, which is due to start in the spring. Hoardings were erected inside the centre, which will remain open to the public throughout the works.
Cllr Lappin added:
“We realise the importance of the Strand to the people who use it and the businesses based there, which is the reason for our refurbishment programme.
“That’s why our aim is to minimise disruption to businesses and customers while the work takes place.”
Stephen Cowperthwaite, Managing Director for Liverpool at Avison Young UK, said:
“The redevelopment of The Strand will be an important catalyst for wider regeneration efforts across Bootle, South Sefton and the wider North Liverpool area, recently forming part of the visionary submission for New Town status. It is fantastic to see the planning application approved for the main works, including landscaping and the creation of new public realm.
“Avison Young is delighted to be working on this landmark scheme, in collaboration with Sefton Council and project partners, and this latest milestone is a critical step forward in the creation of a vibrant neighbourhood that meets the needs of the community.”
