The district of Bath & North East Somerset is in the south-west of England and was formed in 1996 when the county of Avon was abolished. It lies to the southeast of Bristol and continues in the south into the Mendip Hills, east to the Cotswold Hills and the border of Wiltshire. It is mainly a mixed rural and urban district although the towns of Midsomer Norton and Radstock in the south of the district are centres for the manufacturing and engineering industries. Bath is the major city in the area. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a major tourist attraction.
