County Durham is situated in the north east of England with boundaries between the rivers Tyne and Tees and includes a large area of the North Pennines. The largest town in the area is Darlington, well known as a centre for the engineering industry with several industrial estates Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees are also major towns. The main north-south road is the A1(M).
