Alloa is a small, predominantly residential town situated about seven miles east of Stirling and provides excellent transport links by road and rail to all major business centres throughout the country. Alloa has a resident population of approximately 19,000 persons and is the administrative centre of Clackmannanshire Council.
The premises are situated on Grange Road, which is a popular and desirable residential area, a short walk from Alloa Town Centre and amenities such as Tesco Extra, Asda and Alloa Railway Station
The former St John’s Primary School originally dates back to 1908, with extensions being added in 1939 and 1960. The building is a rare and well detailed example of an art noveau school and is one of best examples of the work of George Kerr.
The main school building is Category “B” Listed and retains much of its high quality original detailing. This includes the distinctive art noveau stonework motifs to the balustraded parapet and keystones which are re-interpreted in the interior detailing of the hall.
The original school building will require to be retained, however, the extension which contains the former Gym Hall, is likely to be allowed to be demolished, subject to the relevant consents.
