RAF Ballykelly was commissioned June 1941 and remained an RAF station until 1971 when the Army took over the site and renamed it Shackleton Barracks. The property comprises 2 distinct areas known as Top Camp and Bottom Camp and the two areas are linked via a tarmacadam roadway, Dukes Lane, which runs approximately 250m north between the two sections. Top camp comprises the southernmost portion of the site and is at a higher elevation than the main airfield area, Bottom Camp. Top Camp is broadly rectangular in shape, extending west to east and comprises accommodation blocks along with other ancillary buildings including offices, canteen, gym, medical centre, dental surgery, workshops, mess accommodation and stores.
