Middlesbrough is the principal administritive centre of the Teeside conurbation and is the third largest retail shopping centre in the North East of England with over 1.7 million sq ft of retail floor space. It lies approximately 40 miles south of Newcastle upon Tyne, 12 miles east of Darlington and 52 miles north of York and can be accessed via the A66, A19 and A1(M). Middlesbrough railway station provides regional rail links as well as national links to London King's Cross via nearby Darlington. Additonally numerous bus routes serve the area and Durham Tees Valley Airport lies approximately 10 miles to the south west of the town.
Gilkes Street lies within the pedestrianised area of the town centre running west from Linthorpe Road.
