Location
Oban is a resort town within the Argyll and Bute council area of Scotland. It is the principal town of North Argyll and is informally known as the ‘Gateway to the Isles’. The town has a resident population of around 9,000 people and a catchment of over 20,000, which increases significantly during the peak tourist season. The town itself lies in a crescent occupying the hills surrounding Oban Bay and is located at the western end of the A85 road.
Oban is a very popular tourist destination throughout the year, however, particularly in the summer months. Despite its small size, it is the largest town between Helensburgh (74 miles south-east) and Fort William (44 miles north) and during the tourist season the town usually attracts around 25,000 visitors. The town offers good transport links to the rest of the UK, with daily train and bus services to and from Glasgow. There is an airport outside the village of North Connel, some 5 miles north-east of the town.
In 2007 a further airlink was created between Oban and west central Scotland, seaplanes fly from Glasgow city centre's Seaplane Terminal off the Clyde to the bay in Oban. There is a wide range of retail, commercial and educational facilities available in Oban including leisure centre, fitness centre, sailing club and golf club facilities. There are a number of primary schools and a high school, as well as a medical centre and a hospital.
